Adrian, too, is surprised to find himself thinking about Billie long after their interview is over. Adrian, of course, is irresistible, but Billie isn’t accustomed to being pursued by outrageously attractive male escorts. Adrian wants her, but soon realizes that she can fill a role in his life that’s more than just physical…

About the Author

Shelby Reed is the author of Games People Play. She wrote her first romance with Prince Charming ― literally! ― as the hero, and it's been non-stop story spinning ever since. Despite the idealistic place from which she embarked, she's partial to writing realistic, flawed, multi-faceted characters, lush emotion, and the ever-possible happy ending. When not pecking away at the computer keyboard, Shelby enjoys creative projects such as portraiture and decorating, dabbles in Tarot, and lives a bucolic life with her own Prince Charming in North Florida.

I brought this book after hearing about it on a goodreads list and I wasn't disappointed as I read it in one day and absolutely loved it!
The story is set in the world of Avalon an up-scale male brothel with an elite clientèle, and revolves around the lives of Adrian, one of the male escorts and Billie a reporter.
Reed did a great job with developing all the characters and didn't shy away from depicting the shady and sometimes heartbreaking world of prostitution, even in such as elite setting. The romance between Billie and Adrian was both sweet, sexy and believable considering Adrian's profession. Although a romance and therefore a guaranteed Happy Ever After, this was book that made me cry and wonder if they really would be able to be together.
As it published by Ellora's Cave it does have a fairly high level of sex scenes or sexual references but it all felt very natural and part of the plot rather than the author just deciding 'oh lets put in a sex scene we haven't had one of them in a while'.
Overall a fantastic contemporary romance with a slightly grittier edge to it that I really enjoyed.

    Review

This book is a heartbreaking tale of the shady world of gigolos and the women who seek them out. It's set in a very select club -Avalon -where affluent women seek out male company. Billie is a reporter for the magazine Illicit that has been granted an in depth interview with one of their most experienced male companions Adrian. She's unsure what to expect from their meeting but from the outset is intrigued by the very suave and sinful escort. Billie goes into her meeting with Adrian expecting something seedy and maybe even demeaning but what she finds is a young man full of charm and guile. Adrian quickly turns the tables on Billie and proceeds to press buttons that she never knew she had. His almost incidental attempted seduction of her wakes her up to challenges she has never before encountered. Deeply attracted to Adrian and unsure just what his motives are Billie finds herself becoming more then a little immersed in the sexy yet remote man. As they get to know each other Adrian takes charge more and it's apparent that his interest in her could reveal a part of himself that he tries to deny. Tragedy strikes when Luke a fellow gigolo feels that his life of excess and debauchery is pointless. Feeling an unrequited love for his friend he commits suicide whilst staying at Adrians appartment. Suspicions run high and Billie finds her new feelings for Adrian tested as he struggles to prove his innocence. This is a book that surprised me. I expected it to be an erotic ride full of sex and thrills. Yes it is a sexy read but the two main characters constantly keep each other at a distance in so many ways. It's a sensuous read full of hot interludes but the author doesn't rush the pace. The build up between Adrian and Billie allows the reader to connect and care about them. A thoroughly engaging read that keeps you on the edge as you wait for the young couple to hopefully find a way forward together. Well done Ms.Reed on creating characters that actually grow as the book progresses! Recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Schöne, emotionale Story
Reviewed in Germany on 11 June 2009

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read this year
Reviewed in the United States on 9 November 2013
A copy of this book was provided by the publisher for an honest review at SeductiveMusings.blogspot.com.

I had only recently discovered the books of Shelby Reed when I got the opportunity to review this reissued version of THE FIFTH FAVOR, originally released by Ellora’s Cave back in 2004. It tells the story of a woman who was looking for a big break to help boost her career as a reporter for a sleazy tabloid magazine but ended up finding the one man who could fill the emotional hole in her life. But when the man you love makes his living by sexually servicing other women, can the love you have for each other survive the fallout when he stands accused of murder?

Billie has just come out of a failed marriage where she had been starved for affection from her ex-husband who then proceeded to dump her for a woman more worthy of his love. All she has left is her career, and that isn't going all that great, either. When her boss arranges an interview with one of the most sought-after male escorts at an exclusive brothel for women, Billie is only thinking about how this assignment will help her at work. But when she meets Adrian, it’s all she can do not to allow herself to fall into his arms like every other woman he’s serviced before her. To his credit, Adrian doesn’t see Billie as just another woman to be romanced, although he’s not quite sure what it is about her that he finds so irresistible. When Adrian becomes a suspect in the possible murder of Lucien, his best friend and fellow escort, both his and Billie’s lives are turned upside down and it’s not a sure thing whether they’ll still be with each other with so many obstacles in their path to lasting love.

In THE FIFTH FAVOR, Shelby Reed displays her considerable ability to show her characters’ range of emotions without becoming maudlin or mawkish. Adrian knows his secret life has been a lie, yet it takes the double-whammy of meeting Billie and the death of Lucien to shake him out of the destructive rut he’s been in for so many years. Billie’s self-esteem is hanging by a thread when the most beautiful man she’s ever met actually wants to be with her, but she can’t help thinking that it’s all just part of his polished persona as Adrian, and not the real man who truly loves her. The way they come together and slowly chip away the walls they've each been hiding behind is what makes THE FIFTH FAVOR such a remarkable read for me, and the steps they each make toward their ultimate happy ending had me crying several times all the way until the end of the book. It’s one of the best books I've read this year.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gigolo meets good girl fantasy

    The Premise
Avalon, an exclusive, private club that caters to women’s deepest desires -- in other words, a very high class bordello. Billie Cort, a reporter from the raunchy magazine Illicit, has come to Avalon to interview the club’s most popular escort, the enigmatic and very sexy Adrian.

In a classic gigolo falls for good girl type of story, Adrian and Billie are intrigued with each other, but aware of the impossibility of any type of real relationship. Adrian is under investigation for his best friend’s death and Billie cannot seem to stay away from the mysterious escort who awakens a sexual side she didn’t think she possessed.

    The Good
I did enjoy their conversations and I thought Adrian and Billie had great chemistry. I was definitely on the edge of my seat wondering when they would finally give in completely to their attraction, which I always love.

    The Bad
Sometimes the flowery prose was a bit much, and inappropriate in its description (not offensive, but incorrect). What really knocked me for a loop was the final bit, when Billie essentially betrayed Adrian and then became upset when he was upset at her. I wasn’t a fan of that turn in the story and it pulled me out of the moment.

    The Bottom Line
Overall, except for some moments at the end, I did enjoy the building of this strange little relationship and I rooted for them to get their HEA. Something in the prose was a bit off-putting, but I liked enough of the tale that I may read more of this author’s work - even if I don’t actively seek it out.

Jeez! I was blind-sided by this book! I stumbled across it thanks to Author Sylvia Day. Normally I read a book and move on to the next, but not with this one. I was drawn in by the Billie and Adrian and fell in love with both of them . I was up in the middle of the night, because I couldn't put it down. Shelby Reed paints a great picture of the story in your mind. It's a roller coaster ride. And because it's still dancing around in my head, it will always be a favorite book of mine. My friends will have to get their own. I'm not lending this one out.

Too much chest beating and not enough real passion to capture my "passion". On top of every thing else, not very good editing.
